This is how I believe life should be lived.
Yes, this will be me.
I believe in old-fashioned things like kindness, respect, affection and love.
These things can be easy to find among our people. Family, friends, co-workers. It is free-flowing and an obvious thing.
It can sometimes be misconstrued as a privilege to those deserving. We can put ourselves in power, deciding who gets this or does not. It is not handed out lightly, it is thought out and erred on the side of caution.
This is wrong.
We are not above anyone else. We stand equal with everyone alongside us, everyone we come in contact with.
Those unruly people, those who cause your hair to stand up, or say that one thing that ruins your whole day? Yeah, they need it most.
There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. It is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit – immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. – C.S. Lewis
It hits me out of nowhere sometimes. So strong that the sting of it brings tears to my eyes.
Each person, every one of them…they have dreams. Nightmares that haunt their sleep, and daydreams that light the path of their life. They have memories, they’ve been places, experienced things. Things that have shaped them. Tragedies they are still recovering from, scars they touch daily. They have favorite things, like ice cream and French fries. Their favorite movie makes them cry happy tears, goodbye’s cripple them.
And every single person, they are in the middle of their own battle.
Maybe today they won, not the war, which will always wage, but perhaps today was a good day. Or, perhaps they did lose a war today, and it hurts more than we could ever imagine.
But anywhere they are, they are doing the same as we are.
Trying to survive. To make sense of it all.
Waking up every day saying the same thing, there must be a reason, for everything happening.
Every person you see, has a soul that is going through the same broken world you are.
That is why I believe in kindness.
The thing that can change a person’s day, maybe even their world.
So I will be that person.
Breaking down walls, walking through the awkward.
It takes putting yourself out there sometimes.
Of being thought weird.
Some are not able to receive it well. Maybe they never had it.
But I’ll be there, speaking that beautiful I see.
It takes only some courage, some not thinking of yourself…noticing a haircut, a shirt that makes you smile, shoes that you want to buy, or a habit that you want to encourage.
Speak the beautiful.
Especially to the souls you see struggling.
People have hard days, seasons, lives.
If you see that, find something. Text it, speak it, write it…tell them.
There is always something to be found.
And yes, there will be times it will be mistaken as flirting, or hitting on someone.
I’ll take that risk too.
It’s sad that it is so rare that it is taken as something more than one soul speaking to another.
In a world that holds such beauty, there is no reason to hold back for speaking in kindness, in complimenting one another.
What will it really cost us?
I choose to speak the beautiful.
Bonus? It makes your life abundantly better and more beautiful ;)
